Michael Lawlor believed, the way a lot of people quietly believe, that if a workout was actually working, it should hurt constantly and demand more of him every week. More sets. More soreness. More proof he’d earned it.
His first month at BioFit STL broke his entire worldview. Not because the training was too hard. Because he couldn’t yet trust that doing less, precisely, would beat doing more, indiscriminately.
Four weeks in, a coach pulled up his numbers next to his first session. Ten percent stronger. Michael hadn’t felt it. He hadn’t been sore enough to feel it, by his own old logic. But the machine had measured it, and numbers don’t lie.
That was the moment he stopped fighting the formula and started using it.
Somewhere along the way in his old life, getting strong became complicated. A decade of low fat, then a decade of low carb. The year everyone bought a Peloton, then a rowing machine. Step counters, heart rate zones, intermittent fasting, classes with loud music and an instructor half your age. If you’re honest, you either burned out chasing results that never came, or found it so complicated nothing stuck.
Neither is a character flaw. Both are what an industry that profits from complexity is built to produce. Underneath all of it, there’s a simple equation:
Work + Rest = Results
People miss their results because they’re either over-working or over-resting. Get the two in sync and progress comes quickly, and keeps coming long after the fitness trends move on.
The work has to actually ask something of the body. Walking doesn’t convince it to build strength. Neither does yoga, or a hike, or lifting weights so light you go past twelve reps. Strength requires loading a muscle to the point it cannot produce one more repetition. Stop short of that and you can stay disciplined for years without producing real strength.
The Rest is just as unforgiving. Once you’ve done the work, don’t keep going. All your body needs is to get to complete muscular failure, anything beyond that is a waste of time or setting you up for injuries. I like to tell my clients, “You cannot tan a sunburn!” Going back out there doesn’t deepen your tan, it increases the amount of aloe your partner is going to have to rub tenderly on your backside.
Muscle takes 2 to 3 days to fully recover and reset. The Rest is where the magic happens. The Work is designed to tear down the muscle. The Rest is what rebuilds your muscle stronger than it was before. If you skip the Rest, you’re skipping the rebuild.
Michael had the “no pain, no gain” mindset that all former college athletes have drilled into their heads. He believed that he had to be training five, six, seven days a week, grinding through soreness and calling it commitment, not realizing that he was shorting his progress and increasing his chances of an injury. He never gave his body the time it needed to recover. It was only because his strength output for every session is tracked, that he could finally see in real time how this method works.
At BioFit, every session is built around that principle and nothing beyond it. One set per movement, taken to true muscular failure under computer-controlled resistance that meets exactly the force you produce at every stage of every rep you do. There’s no guesswork and no need for more than one set. Once you’ve done the “Work”, the “Rest” takes care of it… literally.
The American Council on Exercise and Western Colorado University tested this directly, in a twelve-week study on the ARX equipment BioFit uses. One group trained five days a week for forty minutes. The other trained twice a week for twenty. After twelve weeks, the ARX group finished with twice the muscle mass, 2.5 times the fat loss, 90 percent greater strength gains, and 3.5 times VO2 max improvement proving that less is more when you have the right strategy.
Two 20-minute sessions a week stops competing with everything you care about. It’s not the thing you reschedule around your granddaughter’s recital or the trip you keep postponing. You’re not too sore on Saturday to garden, or too depleted Thursday to see the people you love. The strength shows up where it belongs: carrying your bags through the airport, getting off the floor without planning the maneuver, keeping up with the life you built instead of watching it from a chair.
That’s what following the science actually buys you. Not a smaller waistline. A larger life.
Michael didn’t take anyone’s word for the formula. He saw his own number in action. You can see yours, too. Your first session is free. Book an appointment at biofitstl.com and join us at one of our locations in Richmond Heights or Fenton.
