Decades ago, if you had an automobile with automatic transmission, you were a millionaire. This, obviously, hasn’t been the case for some time.
Automatic transmission has become a standard feature in nearly all cars coming from the factory floor, replacing the earlier manual transmission. As such, it has become extremely difficult to find a car with manual transmission, and when you can find one, they are oftentimes more expensive.
But every coin has two sides. Automatic transmission has both advantages as well as disadvantages and it’s good to know as much as you can, especially if you’re going to use an automobile with automatic transmission.
For a start, it’s much easier to learn as you do not have to bother about coordinating clutch and accelerator (in other words, both your legs) when changing gears. Because of this, driving has become much easier.
This definitely is very useful and less tiresome, especially in touch-and-go or bumper-to-bumper situations (which you can hardly avoid in any part of town), mostly due to an increase in drivers. You no longer have the jump-and-jerk motion which you would have experienced if you were using a manual transmission— that fun (or embarrassing, depending upon who you ask) part has been eliminated.
On the opposite side, there’s no shortage of handicap when talking about automatic transmission. It becomes so comfortable, sometimes even making you nod off on the smooth long drive on a straight highway or a country road. Another handicap is that you can no longer push-start when your battery is almost dead or is too weak. You can only jump-start—and you would be wise to prepare for that situation, especially on a long drive, as well as hope and pray that there’s a Good Samaritan around to assist, since this can’t be done solo.
